Matthiesen, Wickert & Lehrer, S.C., (“MWL”) is pleased to welcome seasoned trial attorney Allen Ratkowski to the firm as litigation counsel in our Wisconsin office. Al brings with him a wealth of high-exposure litigation experience to bear on MWL’s subrogation and defense practice in Wisconsin and other states. Al has nearly 30 years of hands-on litigation experience, including product liability, workplace safety, design and construction defects, vehicular accidents, insurance coverage, breach of contract, appeals, and all types of damages, such as bodily injury, psychological problems, business and income loss, and property damage. Al joins MWL after over 20 years with the Milwaukee litigation firm of Piper & Schmidt, where he became especially skilled in complex legal research and evaluation of insurance coverage, liability, and damages, lay and legal writing, civil procedure, client communication, and interacting with experts and professionals from many disciplines.

Al also served as appellate law clerk for Wisconsin Court of Appeals Chief Justice Lisa Neubauer and Presiding Justice Paul Gartzke. Al graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1991, where he graduated with Honors and served as Note and Comment Editor on the Wisconsin International Law Journal.
Al believes in hard work and that, in the words of Pele, “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” With that attitude, he will be a perfect fit here at MWL. Al will be handling complex property and casualty subrogation and defense along with workers’ compensation and automobile subrogation cases throughout Wisconsin and across the country. We look forward to the vast amount of experience and insight Al brings to the firm, and we eagerly welcome him to our Wisconsin office.
In his free time, Al loves spending time with his family and its combined over-the-top schedule—his wife, Lisa, and children, Alyssa (21), Ryan (17), Jay (15), and Claire (11), where the kids are all in an intense mix of baseball, soccer, gymnastics, cross-country, dance, theatre, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc., which gives Lisa and Al plenty to watch and enjoy. He also likes to keep up on World and National news, as well as sports generally, especially our Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers. Al and his family were recently featured in the November 2020 Franklin Neighbors Magazine, see HERE.
On behalf of the partners, associates, legal assistants, and support staff at all of MWL’s offices, we would like to welcome Al to the firm. We would also invite our clients and friends to introduce themselves to Al, who can be reached at [email protected].
